The official holiday Mother's Day in Russia appeared recently. Until 1998, our dear mothers, like all Russian women, had only one holiday - March 8th. The initiator of the establishment of Mother's Day was the State Duma Committee on Women, Youth and Family Affairs. On January 30, 1998, Russian President Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin signed a decree on celebrating All-Russian Mother's Day on the last Sunday in November. Why this particular date was chosen for Mother’s Day is not clear. Most likely, there were no other “free” places in the Russian holiday calendar at that time.

Mother's Day was first celebrated in Russia in November 1999. Since that time, the holiday began to gain popularity, gained popular recognition and easily took root in the calendar of Russian holidays.

Every year on the last Sunday of November it is customary to congratulate not only mothers, but also pregnant women. In recent years, it has become a good tradition to honor and reward mothers with many children and mothers who take in orphans in honor of the holiday. 1. The word “mother” sounds similar in many languages. It is believed that it comes from the sounds that the child makes.

2. In the USSR there were special awards for mothers. The Motherhood Medal was awarded to women who gave birth and raised 5 or 6 children. Those who gave birth and raised 7, 8 or 9 children were awarded the Order of Maternal Glory. And if there are 10 or more children, the order and title “Mother Heroine” is awarded.

3. How many children can one woman give birth to? So far, the record is 69. It was set in the 18th century by the wife of a Russian peasant, Fyodor Vasilyev; history has not preserved her name. She gave birth 27 times: several times there were twins, triplets and even four children at the same time. Moreover, despite the high infant mortality rate characteristic of that time, only two children of this family died in infancy.
