A collection of Russian folk songs aimed at educating patriotic feelings of senior preschool age

Russian folk songs for young children

This publication continues the line begun by the collection “Your First Songs” and associated with the publication of Russian folk songs for children's choirs. If the songs included in the first collection were exclusively single-voice and had piano accompaniment, then this release includes folk samples designed for polyphonic performance and mostly without instrumental accompaniment. In addition, the previous collection was addressed to children of preschool and primary school age, and the new edition is intended for both junior and senior schoolchildren. The main goal pursued by the compiler is to provide choirmasters working with children with a highly artistic repertoire that will help develop such important skills in the choir as the ability to sing in several voices and perform works without instrumental accompaniment.

In the collection you can find a number of treatments that have already found wide application in artistic practice. These arrangements belong to outstanding Russian composers who did a lot to promote folk music - N. Rimsky-Korsakov, A. Lyadov, Vik. Kalinnikov, wonderful masters of Soviet choral art - A. Sveshnikov, V. Sokolov and others. Most of the songs in this collection are published for children's choral performance for the first time, and many of them have been specially processed for this publication. These songs are selected from various folklore collections and represent the most diverse regions of Russia. Among the published samples there are very ancient tunes, songs of Russian antiquity and a number of modern melodies. In some cases, the text of the songs is shortened, local dialect expressions are replaced by generally accepted literary ones, individual melodies are transposed in comparison with the original sources into tonality convenient for children's performance. At the same time, taking into account the wide addressee of the collection, the compiler included arrangements of varying degrees of complexity, varied in genre and content: songs of the calendar, rituals, round dances, everyday songs, games, patriotic, lyrical, satirical and comic.

Are folk children's songs no longer interesting to modern children?

Some parents and teachers object to folk play songs. In their opinion, it’s time to remove the round dances “Crane” and “How Our Girlfriends Went” from the compulsory repertoire, because they are uninteresting neither in sound nor in movement. Others are confident that such songs should firmly become part of the everyday life of kindergartens, that they foster a love of folk art and develop musical abilities. Folk song greatly helps in the artistic education of children. The melodiousness of the melody, written at intervals convenient for singing, contributes to the development of the child’s voice. It is worth noting that recently modern children have shown interest in modern tracks, for example, such as “She’s like a tomboy, she’s a hooligan.” By clicking on the link, you have the opportunity to listen and download this track.

Thus, opinions were divided. What is true in these judgments? First of all, it is necessary to say separately about the folk songs themselves and about the movements that accompany their text. These dramatization games can be modified. In collections they are often presented in different versions. The teacher can choose them at his own discretion or somehow diversify these movements himself.

But the folk songs themselves should be approached differently. Folk and native melodies are the source of a child’s initial musical impressions, an excellent and accessible model for reproducing them, since the child hears them from the cradle.

From the works of folk art for children, first of all, those songs that were created specifically for them are selected. These include Russian folk songs, the most varied: affectionate and lullabies, play songs (for kids “Ladushki”, for older ones “A birch tree stood in the field”) or games with singing (“Raven”, “How our girlfriends went”).

But when using folk songs in kindergarten, difficulties arise. Songs are sometimes difficult for children to understand, because they reflect the thoughts and aspirations of long-gone years. The question arises: is it not advisable to take the melodies of folk songs so that our best poets write new texts, and composers make piano arrangements? An impeccable knowledge of folk style, a sense of proportion inherent in the best poets and composers, would make it possible to enrich the songs and thereby bring them closer to children. Obviously, this issue still requires discussion.
